Job Description:

CMSE is looking for Summer Interns for Summer 2024 through the Federal Work Study Program. The Summer Interns are responsible for working with the Associate Director on day-to-day tasks related to the execution of CMSE’s summer programs and for the day-to-day maintenance of the main office and student workstation. The student must complete all tasks delegated by his or her supervisor, or any other higher level employee of the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering. 

Some tasks include, scheduling, planning, presenting, program evaluation, data collection, etc. The time commitment for this role is 20 – 30 hours weekly, over 8 – 10 weeks.

Responsibilities:  

Phones: The Summer Intern is responsible for appropriately answering incoming phone calls to the main office of the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering as well as recording messages as necessary. The office assistant may make outgoing calls when instructed or when necessary to complete his or her tasks.

Mail: The Summer Intern is responsible for sorting incoming mail when the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering is scheduled. The Office Assistant must also pick up the office’s daily mail and place each item of mail in the respected recipient’s office.

Office Maintenance: The Summer Intern is expected to perform the following tasks to ensure the maintenance and tidiness of the office and student workstation:

  • Wipe down the tables; vacuum the floor; take out the trash; and clean the coffee station in the common area daily.
  • Clean office microwave and refrigerator when necessary or instructed.
  • Monitor ink levels in the office printers.
  • Monitor and refill the paper for the office printers.

Staff Participation: The Summer Intern will be tasked to attend and participate in the following:

  • Participate in all training sessions and staff meetings both prior to, and during the Summer Internship Program.
  • Attend all program hallmark events such as orientation program, closing program, research symposium, and CMSE internship closing, and any other meetings/events as necessary.
  • Write a final paper evaluating and discussing your experiences in the program on August 7, 2024. 

Additional Responsibilities: The Summer Intern is liable for completion of all assigned tasks by supervisor. Tasks may include: filing, mail merges, database management, mass mailings, organizing the storage rooms and pantry and storage room inventory. There will also be other duties as assigned. Experience using Microsoft and Google Suites is preferred.

Job Description:

The Dean's Office is located in the main hub of the lobby, and administratively supports a minimum of seven Assistant and Associate Deans. All of this is accomplished with the help of Federal Work Study employees and two full time permanent staffers. We have many events and initiatives to plan and see to fruition, along with many high level meetings and committees with legislators, community leaders, as well as colleagues and collaborators from this University and others across the country. We are the main force behind Public Health Research Day at Maryland, a conference that attracts more than 450 participants every year. We have Grand Round events with leaders in the public health fields, both nationally and internationally. This exposes the students to many opportunities to engage with them or hear them speak in intimate forums. We are the first point of contact for students/parents entering the school, calling for information on programs, exception to policy, transfer of majors, etc.

  • The Language and Cognition Lab primarily studies how children from varied backgrounds (e.g., with Developmental Language Disorder, low-income vs. high-income) comprehend language. Our primary research method is eye-tracking, but the lab also conducts interviews and collects long-form recordings.
  • The LCL summer work-study RA will code eye-tracking videos from our study working with children with Developmental Language Disorder.

Qualifications:

  • Interested in work at the intersection of hearing and speech sciences, linguistics, and developmental psychology.
